Emma Miller appears to be the most blessed girl in Indiana. She teaches school, enjoys the attention of a wonderful man and has a loving family. But this Amish girl has more on her mind than buggies and bonnets; she longs for adventure and wants to see the world. So when her father convinces her to spend them summer with relatives in Charm, Ohio, Emma jumps at the chance. In Charm, she meets an Englisher who has come to town to escape her chaotic life and despite their differences, the two become fast friends. Rachel Troyer (Lancaster) is a policewoman in the heart of Ohio's Amish county. Worried about the health of her aging Amish aunts, Rachel convinces the trio to retire from running the inn they've owned for decades. When Joe, (Scott) a penniless stranger and his young son show up on their doorstep, Rachel's eldest aunt (McGillis) allows him to stay. Joe's reluctance to talk about his past raises Rachel's suspicions, despite his charming personality. When the aunts invite Joe to stay indefinitely as the inn's handyman, Rachel employs her police training to uncover his secrets. What she discovers is more shocking than she ever expected.
